The 2010 Schillaci Stakes will take place at the esteemed Caulfield Racecourse this Saturday at the latest Melbourne Spring Carnival feature meeting, Caulfield Guineas Day.
The $200,000 Group 2 Schillaci Stakes (1000m) has attracted a final field of nine sprinters, most notably Peter Moody’s mare Black Caviar making her return to racing following a ligament injury.
Four-year-old Black Caviar has raced five times for five wins over her career, including her most recent victory in the Group 2 Australian Stakes back in January.
Back from an extended spell, the punters and bookies are backing Black Caviar to maintain her unbeaten record on Saturday with Sportsbet installing her as the hot $1.75 favourite in their Schillaci Stakes betting.
Other horses in the Schillaci Stakes field for Saturday’s weight-for-age showdown that could cause an upset include Star Witness currently paying $5.50 and $7 chance Mic Mac.
Drawn ideally on the rails in gate one, Danny O’Brien’s three-year-old colt Star Witness has enjoyed three wins from their five career starts including the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes last season as a two-year-old.
Star Witness is coming off an eye-catching third to boom runner Toorak Toff in the Vain Stakes and is tipped to improve second-up on Saturday carrying just 53kg.
Our other value pick is the Paul Messara-trained Mic Mac drawn midfield in barrier seven.
Resuming racing after running third in the Stradbroke Handicap back in June, five-year-old Statue Of Liberty gelding Mic Mac won a barrier trial at Rosehill over 900m last week and although he may find the pace a bit quick on Saturday is still an excellent Place chance through Sportsbet.
The other two most notable entries in the Schillaci Stakes are the Lee Freedman-trained First Command and David Payne’s consistent four-year-old Winter King, both top picks to add into a Trifecta through Sportsbet.
Scheduled as Race 4 at Caulfield for Saturday and due to jump at 2:00pm, the 2010 Schillaci Stakes is one of six Group status races on the card.
The headline event is the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) where Ilovethiscity and Toorak Toff will face off, while other highlights include the Group 1 Yalumba Stakes (200m) featuring Cox Plate champion So You Think and the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) where glamour mare More Joyous will start the favourite.
