2014 Schillaci Stakes May Figure for Srikandi

September 9th, 2014

Trainer Ciaron Maher has revealed talented mare Srikandi has taken well to her time in the spelling paddock and return to work well ahead of a likely returning to racing in the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes (1000m) at Caulfield on October 11th.

Failing to finish outside the places in seven starts this year, Srikandi has not been seen at the races since charging home to finish a fighting third behind River Lad and Temple Of Boom in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 7th, in what also figured as her first start at the highest level of Australian racing.

Contesting an 800m hit-out at Caulfield earlier this week, Maher told Racing Victoria Srikandi is not yet at peak racing condition, but still has plenty of time until her likely return in the 2014 Schillaci Stakes.

“It was very soft, but she went well,” Maher said of the Caulfield trial.

“Her action was good, Michelle (Payne, jockey) said she gave her a good feel and she’s coming up nicely.

“She’s still a little way off and she’s still way ahead of time.

“She’ll probably go to Cranbourne in a couple of weeks. A little trip away won’t hurt her.”

Claiming an exceptional record of six race wins and two minor places from just eight competitive starts so far, Srikandi charged home to win the Slickpix Plate Maiden (1000m) on debut in September last year before immediately returning to the paddock.

Returning for second in The Drain Man Fillies (1000m) on February 28th, the Dubawi mare secured an impressive run of five consecutive race wins, highlighted by both the Listed Silk Stocking (1200m), Listed Juanmo Stakes (1200m) and Group 3 Glenlogan Park Stakes (1350m) in the weeks leading up to her strong run for third in the Stradbroke Handicap.

Yet to be confirmed for a specific path through the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival, the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) may figure as an ideal target for Srikandi on November 1st.
