2015 Schillaci Stakes to Figure for Lankan Rupee

July 6th, 2015

A five-time Group 1 champion, star sprinter Lankan Rupee has been confirmed to contest the 2015 Group 2 Schillaci Stakes (1100m) during his Spring Carnival campaign, with trainer Mick Price confident the revised conditions of the race will play directly into his strengths.

Lankan Rupee stamped he claims as 2014 horse of the year when posting three Group 1 wins through the Autumn Carnival, and while unable to reach the same racing highs in spring, still managed to take out the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) most notably.

Confirming the Redoute’s Choice gelding’s major target remains the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) during the Flemington Carnival in November, Price told Racing Victoria he is confident the addition of 100m and alternation to weight-for-age conditions will suit Lankan Rupee to a tee.

“The Schillaci fits into that sprint program a bit better now, being 1100 metres and weight-for-age,” Price said.

“It suits us, anyway. He’ll run in the Schillaci on the way to the Darley Classic.”

Lankan Rupee has posted impressive results since first debuting for Price during the spring of 2012, but was unable to produce much of a consistent run of form until his gelding as the conclusion of the 2013 autumn.

Claiming three wins and a minor through the 2013 spring, the gelding out of Estelle Collection went unbeaten during the 2014 autumn; taking out the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) with complete ease first-up when winning each of the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m), Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) and Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) in succession; each more dominant than the next.

Running second in both the Group 2 McEwen Stakes (100m) and Group 1 Moir Stakes (1200m) in the lead-up to his Manikato Stakes success, Lankan Rupee ended his campaign a credible third in the Darley Classic; returning this year for a resounding first-up success in the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m).

While unable to make much of a competitive impact in his two most recent starts, Lankan Rupee has reportedly returned to work in great order leading into the 2015 Spring Carnival.
