Trainer Matt Dale has revealed stable star Fell Swoop is likely to return to racing in the 2016 Schillaci Stakes (1000m) at Caulfield, during the forthcoming Spring Racing Carnival.
Fell Swoop has been a standout performer throughout his entire racing career so far; posting nine wins and a further three minors through only sixteen career starts, but undoubtedly returned to racing through the recent Autumn Carnival in career-best form to date.
With a view towards the major sprinting targets of the 2017 Autumn Carnival, Dale told Racing Victoria the Not A Single Doubt gelding will be kept to a light spring campaign this year; likely to begin in the 2016 Schillaci Stakes.
“He just resumed a light bit of pre-training last week, and he’ll be set for a pretty light spring,” Dale said.
“I’m just finalising his program now but he’s likely to kick off late September, early October.
“The Moir (Stakes) is there, probably the more-likely option is the Schillaci a week later at Caulfield.
“At this stage, I’m only thinking of having two or three runs in the spring but the Darley Classic is on the agenda.”
Fell Swoop was dominant in a number of minor targets through an impressive 2015 campaign, and completed his season with consecutive wins in the Listed Cup Club Stakes (1200m) and Listed Testa Rossa Stakes (1200m).
Rated only a slight chance of success in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) first-up this year, Fell Swoop mustered a typically smart turn of foot to finish an agonizingly-close second to Flamberge in a photo.
Progressing to second in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m), the gelding out of Touched In Flight produced arguably a career-best performance to date to finish second behind Chautauqua in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) on Day 1 of The Championships.
Arriving in Brisbane for success in the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m), Fell Swoop progressed to fifth in the Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) but had clearly had enough by the time he finished sixth in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) last time out on May 28th.
