Twelve sprinters will line up for the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes (1100m); arguably figuring as the most lucrative race from a betting standpoint to be run in Melbourne on 2016 Caulfield Guineas Day this weekend.
Three-year-old Star Turn has returned to racing in slick form this time and remains a clear $2.70 favourite in 2016 Schillaci Stakes betting markets with Ladbrokes.com.au, ahead of Fell Swoop ($7) and Malaguerra ($8.50).
Will Star Turn justify favouritism and win the 2016 Schillaci Stakes, or will one of his classy rivals post an upset?
Godolphin entire Furnaces has returned to racing in particularly slick form this time, is drawn ideally in barrier 5 with James McDonald in the saddle and is more than worth consideration for a bet at current Schillaci Stakes odds. Posting a career total of three wins and four minors through only ten competitive starts, Furnaces won the Vobis Gold Rush (1100m) in autumn before a luckless run for fifth in the Listed Ortensia Stakes (1100m). Having run second behind Wild Rain and in front of Heatherly in the Group 2 McEwen Stakes (1000m) first-up, Furnaces is over the Schillaci Stakes odds at $14 to win.
Fell Swoop ($7)
Fell Swoop was one of the more consistent sprinters through the recent Autumn Carnival, but the five-year-old may require his first-up run in the Schillaci Stakes to find peak condition. Running an agonizingly-close second in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) first-up this year, the Not A Single Doubt gelding ran fourth in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) before arguably a career-best performance to date for second behind Chautauqua in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) during The Championships. Returning to winning form in the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m), Fell Swoop was returned to the paddock after failing to fire in either of the Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) and Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m).
Dothraki is sure to have taken plenty of benefit from a first-up run for fourth in the Group 2 The Shorts (1100m) on September 17th, and will leave from the ideal barrier 3 in the Schillaci Stakes 2016. Running third in The Galaxy and fifth in the TJ Smith Stakes in autumn, the Mossman gelding ran a close second in the BTC Cup upon arriving in Brisbane, before a luckless fifth in the Doomben 10,000. Mark Zahra will take the ride on Dothraki on Saturday, but the gelding will be having his first run in Melbourne this time in the race and could get a little lost at the opposite way of going.
